Saddle fantail pigeons have always been a challenge to raise with perfect markings when trying to follow the show standards, so I have been busy the last 8 years working towards that goal. My website will give you where I started and where I am now, along with some pictures of the birds I am using.
I purchased my first pair of saddles from Dennis Soares (Master Breeder in California). The cock bird is a bluebar and the hen is black with perfect markings. From this pair I have raised only black saddles, so I purchased a black saddle hen from a breeder in Oklahoma along with a pair of red saddles and an extra yellow hen. I had been getting some really good looking young along the way, but not with the show features I desired. However, now with selectively breeding the best back to the original pair from Dennis, I am getting some really good looking birds. Two years ago I purchased a yellow saddle cock and a red saddle hen from Stan Osterbaan and an ash red saddle, a blue bar saddle and a black saddle from Jerald Kitchens. They have really improved the show features in my birds.
When I purchased my first pair from Dennis, I had not intended to show my birds (just raise really nice marked birds for my own enjoyment), but after attending the Pageant of Pigeons Show in California for three years and showing one year, I got the bug to compete and raise my birds to the show standards. I have raised 30 to 40 saddles each year.....keeping the best 3 or 4 and selling the rest. I am raising saddles in black, red, yellow, ash red and bluebar.
